Today, Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10), Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, questioned Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy Dr. John Plumb.
Dr. Plumb appeared before the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Strategic Forces to discuss FY25 Priorities for National Security Space Programs.
In the first public testimony from a Biden Administration official before Congress, Dr. Plumb said, “Russia is also developing a concerning anti-satellite capability related to a new satellite carrying a nuclear device that Russia is developing. This capability could pose a threat to all satellites operated by countries and companies around the globe, as well as to the vital communications, scientific, meteorological, agricultural, commercial, and national security services we all depend upon.”
Upon further questioning by Chairman Turner, Dr. Plumb acknowledged that if detonated, the nuclear, anti-satellite weapon could render low-earth orbit unusable for a year.
