Crawford, Himes Request AG Bondi & FBI Director Patel Respond to Alleged Leak of Classified Information Pertaining to U.S. Strikes on Iran

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Rick Crawford (AR-01) and Ranking Member Jim Himes (CT-04) sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel requesting that they exercise their respective authorities to conduct a robust investigation into press reports of an alleged leak of a "preliminary classified U.S. report" allegedly assessing the impact of the U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. If a perpetrator is found, they request that AG Bondi prosecute the offender to the “fullest extent of the law” warranted.

The Chairman and Ranking Member wrote, “As the Chairman and Ranking Member of the relevant congressional committee tasked with overseeing the U.S. Intelligence Community, these allegations of improper disclosure of national security information strike at the heart of our solemn and apolitical mission to ensure classified data never falls into the hands of our adversaries. We are unified in our understanding that improper disclosure of classified information has no place in our body politic, nor are such disclosures in our nation's interests.”

They continued, “We are aware of no evidence suggesting who was the source of this alleged leak, however we agree that Members of Congress and Congressional staff have a duty to protect classified information, just as those in the Executive Branch do. Accordingly, we intend to jointly review the Committee’s internal controls to determine if there are ways they can be strengthened, and we commit to consulting with appropriate experts in the Executive Branch as we do so. Our expectation is that the Intelligence Community will continue to share classified reporting with the Committee in a complete and timely fashion, in keeping with the statutory requirement to keep the intelligence committees fully and currently informed.”
