Statement by Ruppersberger on Senate Cyber Bill
“Events in Senate Today Are Incredibly Disappointing”

Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD), the Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee, released the following statement about the failure of the Senate to advance its cyber security bill.

“The events today in the Senate that prevent its cyber legislation from moving forward are incredibly disappointing.  The only thing standing in the way of making major improvements to our country’s cyber defenses is Congress.

From the very beginning, I have said Congress needs to move swiftly to protect our networks from a catastrophic attack and prevent countries like China from pilfering American trade secrets and using them to gain market share and steal jobs.  In April, the House passed legislation that allows the government to share valuable intelligence about cyber threats with businesses so they can protect themselves.  The bill passed by a strong bipartisan margin and is a good first step to defend our nation against cyber attacks.

This should not be the end of the line for cyber security legislation in this Congress.  I urge the Senate to regroup, focus on areas where there is agreement, and pass cyber security legislation that our country so critically needs.”
