Chairman Rogers & Ranking Member Ruppersberger Joint Statement on the 13th Anniversary of September 11, 2001

“On this somber day, we remember the lives tragically cut short on September 11, 2001. We should also reflect on what remains necessary to defend the United States. After the attacks, the United States responded with bold actions against al Qaeda around the world. We made significant changes and improvements to our intelligence capabilities and counterterrorism operations to address the evolving threat. These programs have been highly effective and we should maintain them in order to protect our country, its citizens, and our allies, while at the same time looking to maximize privacy and civil liberties. That there has not been a successful, large-scale attack on our homeland is not luck or coincidence. Defending America requires constant vigilance. We must remain focused on the growing array of threats around the globe. As terrorists continue to make gains in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, we must reaffirm our resolve to defeat these threats.”
