Nunes Comments on Release of Usama Bin Laden Documents

House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes issued the following statement today in response to the release by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence of a new tranche of documents seized from Usama Bin Laden’s compound:    

“In the May 1, 2011 raid that killed Usama Bin Laden, the U.S. collected a treasure trove of documents and files. It is in the interest of the American public for citizens, academics, journalists, and historians to have the opportunity to read and understand Bin Laden’s documents. In 2012, the Obama administration announced the declassification and release of 17 intelligence reports by the West Point Combating Terrorism Center. Seventeen additional reports were declassified for use in court cases. But the public deserves more. That is why I pushed to include language in the Fiscal Year 2014 Intelligence Authorization Act directing the declassification of intelligence reports that are representative of the intelligence produced from the documents.

“Today’s release of 86 new reports by the Director of National Intelligence – bringing the total number of declassified reports to 120 – is a step in the right direction. I look forward to the conclusion of the ongoing efforts to declassify the hundreds of remaining Abbottabad reports to meet congressional requirements.”
