Crawford: The Global AI Race is Moving Much Faster Than Many Think

WASHINGTON, D.C.— House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Rick Crawford (AR-01) released the following statement after the Committee hosted an unclassified, full-Committee briefing with industry experts on the global artificial intelligence race against China.

“The global AI race against China is moving much faster than many think, and the stakes couldn’t be higher for U.S. national security. At this HPSCI briefing, Members heard directly from industry experts working on the cutting edge of AI development. The briefing helped inform our efforts to make sure the IC is incorporating advanced AI technology into its activities while staying ahead of our adversaries, most notably China. Frontier labs may soon achieve self-improving AI, and the U.S. must reach this threshold first to secure economic and national security dominance and potentially enjoy an enduring advantage over our adversaries.

“The message coming out of this briefing was clear—the U.S. must win this AI race, and the fundamental pillar for success is out-computing our adversary. To that end, vigorous export controls that maintain the U.S. infrastructure lead are critical for stymying China’s advance while slowing DeepSeek’s ability to use U.S. hardware to compete against us. Additionally, there are steps the IC can take now to prepare, including building out adequate compute to scale AI across the IC’s mission, reforming the acquisition process to adopt AI models more quickly, and developing a qualified workforce to leverage these technologies across the IC’s workflows. There are several avenues we will be looking to pursue in this year’s Intelligence Authorization Act to help the IC stay ahead of the curve.”
