SYRACUSE, NEW YORK — Today, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Rick Crawford (AR-01) and Rep. Claudia Tenney (NY-24) hosted a roundtable discussion at Hancock Air National Guard Base in Syracuse, New York, with federal, state, and private-sector partners on the growing counterintelligence threats from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to the state of New York.

Roundtable briefers included Wes Street, Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and senior leaders from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA), the Army Counterintelligence Command (ACIC), the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), and the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) and Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

The event consisted of a classified and an unclassified portion focused on the importance of the collective effort at the federal, state, and local levels to detect, deter, and disrupt the counterintelligence threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party in the U.S. homeland, and specifically in New York.

This is the fifth roundtable event that Chairman Crawford has hosted across the country, focused on convening federal, state, and local officials with private-sector partners to discuss a renewed response to counterintelligence threats. This effort is part of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence’s aggressive work to reform the U.S. counterintelligence apparatus that is failing to take an offensive posture to combat the pervasive threats we face in the homeland today.

“In today’s age, an attack on our nation might not come by aerial bombing campaigns. It might not come with fiery assaults on civilian or military infrastructure, inflicting mass causalities,” said Chairman Crawford. “A new kind of attack may come quickly and quietly with debilitating consequences for the security and prosperity of our country. We cannot risk waiting for the counterintelligence version of September 11th to make the reforms needed to strategically disable, disrupt, and neutralize foreign intelligence entities’ activities against the United States.”

“Protecting our national security starts with defending our communities here at home,” said Rep. Claudia Tenney. “The Chinese Communist Party is targeting American industry, research, and critical infrastructure to undermine our economic strength and threaten our way of life. These operations go beyond stealing information. The CCP is seeking access to the systems Americans depend on so it can disrupt essential services and exploit that access in a crisis. This roundtable brings my work on the House Intelligence Committee home to Upstate New York, connecting federal experts with local leaders to confront these threats. I thank Chairman Crawford for his leadership as we work to hold the CCP accountable and put the safety and security of Americans first.”
